Science at Sowing Seeds.

From Year 5 to Year 11, the Science curriculum at Sowing Seeds Alternative Learning provides a comprehensive and progressive journey through Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, aligning with National Curriculum objectives, Oak Academies schemes of work and culminating in GCSE Single or Double Award Science.

In Key Stage 2 (Years 5 & 6), students build foundational knowledge by exploring topics such as living things and their habitats, animals (including humans), plants, properties and changes of materials, forces, electricity, Earth and Space, light, and sound. The emphasis is on hands-on investigations and observation.

Moving into Key Stage 3 (Years 7, 8 & 9), the curriculum deepens understanding with more complex concepts. Biology covers cells, human body systems, reproduction, ecosystems, inheritance, and evolution.

Chemistry delves into particles, elements, compounds, reactions, acids/alkalis, the Periodic Table, and Earth’s resources. Physics explores forces, energy, electricity, magnetism, waves, and space physics. Practical work remains central, fostering independent inquiry.

Finally, in Key Stage 4 (Years 10 & 11), the focus shifts to GCSE Single or Double Award Science.

This pathway provides an integrated study across all three disciplines. Key topics include advanced cell biology, infection, homeostasis, and ecology in Biology; atomic structure, bonding, quantitative chemistry, organic chemistry, and atmospheric chemistry in Chemistry; and detailed studies of forces, energy, waves, electricity, magnetism, and atomic structure in Physics. The curriculum prepares pupils for the demands of the GCSE examinations and future scientific pathways.
