ICT at Sowing Seeds.
The ICT (Computing) curriculum at Sowing Seeds Alternative Learning provides pupils with the essential digital literacy, computing knowledge, and problem-solving skills required to thrive in a digital society. From Years 5 to 11, the curriculum combines computer science, information technology, and digital media, ensuring pupils can use technology safely, responsibly, and creatively.
In Years 5 and 6, pupils are introduced to the fundamentals of computing through block-based programming, digital media projects, and productivity software. They learn about computer systems, the internet, and safe online communication, while also developing practical skills in creating digital content such as videos and vector graphics.
In Years 7 to 9, pupils move on to more advanced computing concepts. They transition to text-based programming using Python, explore data representation and computer systems, and develop practical skills in databases, spreadsheets, and web design. Digital media projects such as animation and website creation encourage creativity, while lessons on e-safety, misinformation, and digital wellbeing develop critical awareness.
In Years 10 and 11, pupils prepare for formal qualifications, typically GCSE Computer Science or vocational ICT pathways such as Cambridge Nationals, ASDAN, or Functional Skills. Learning includes programming, data and networks, cybersecurity, digital media creation, and applied ICT skills for real-world contexts. Teaching focuses on retrieval practice, project work, and exam literacy, while alternative accreditation pathways are offered to ensure success for all learners.
Across Years 5–11, the ICT curriculum is sequenced to build progressively from basic digital literacy to advanced computing knowledge. Pupils leave Sowing Seeds equipped with recognised qualifications, strong practical skills, and the confidence to participate effectively and responsibly in an increasingly digital world.
