Geography at Sowing Seeds.
The Geography curriculum provides pupils with the knowledge, skills, and curiosity to understand the relationship between people, places, and the environment. Across Years 5 to 11, the curriculum develops pupils’ awareness of local, national, and global issues, while equipping them with enquiry, fieldwork, and critical thinking skills to make sense of an ever-changing world.
In Years 5 and 6, pupils begin with local geography, mapping, and fieldwork before exploring physical features such as rivers, mountains, weather, and climate. They compare regions within the UK with contrasting parts of the world, building cultural awareness and an understanding of environmental diversity.
In Years 7 to 9, pupils broaden their geographical knowledge through the study of population and migration, urbanisation, tectonic hazards, ecosystems, coasts, weather and climate, and global development. Fieldwork and enquiry-based projects are central to this stage, helping pupils apply classroom learning to real-world contexts while developing skills in data collection, presentation, and interpretation.
In Years 10 and 11, pupils typically follow a GCSE Geography pathway, supported by alternative ASDAN accreditations where appropriate. They study human and physical geography in depth, covering themes such as urban issues, economic development, resource management, ecosystems, and natural hazards. Fieldwork and issue evaluation tasks prepare pupils for formal assessments, with teaching focused on retrieval practice, case study application, and exam literacy.
Throughout Years 5–11, the Geography curriculum builds pupils’ ability to think critically about global challenges such as climate change, sustainability, and inequality. Pupils leave with qualifications or accreditation that reflect their progress and with transferable skills of enquiry, evaluation, and problem-solving that prepare them for further education, training, and employment.
